Mission Statement

Dr. Short, a gastroenterologist with private practice in Decatur, and his wife Mayra opened CMM to provide primary care for low income, uninsured Hispanics in their own language at a discounted rate. Mrs. Short negotiated discounts through the local hospitals for labs and imaging (CT scans, MRIs, etc.) and with various specialists in the area. Despite this, the cost of medical care is still out of reach for this patient population. Tests can be very expensive creating an obstacle in the diagnosis and care of patients. CMM has partnered with the Huntsville Council of St. Vincent de Paul which pays the outpatient services patients cannot afford. CMM also provides urology, rheumatology, endocrinology, and gastroenterology clinics on site at low cost. These clinics are critical in providing care and contribute a much-needed additional income. CMM offers a free diabetic foot care clinic and classes on diabetes. These classes are pivotal in improving and maintaining health outcomes given our patients do not understand their medical conditions and need for care. As CMM patients are diagnosed with significant diseases, some need expensive medications which we help our patients obtain through the pharmaceutical companies’ patients assistance programs. Finally, CMM expects to partner with Hudson Alpha in providing limited genetic testing for patients that qualify. The Shorts, Hispanic immigrants themselves, see the clinic as a personal call to improve the health of their community and their fellow immigrants. There is no clinic like it in northern Alabama and possibly, in the state.
